TAPI Welcomes Recommendations of the UN Panel of Experts on Sri Lanka

The Tamil American Peace Initiative (TAPI) welcomes the recommendations laid out in the executive summary of the panel of experts report commissioned by United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

"I am extremely relieved to learn the report calls into question the integrity of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission, along with that of the Sri Lankan government,” said TAPI spokesman Dr. Karunyan Arulanantham. “Due to the government’s failure to act in earnest towards healing the deep wounds of its people, the only way for Sri Lanka to achieve meaningful, lasting reconciliation is through the establishment of an independent, international mechanism to oversee the accountability process. I am thankful to the panel of experts for seeing through the myriad of misinformation put forth by the Sri Lankan government and their diligence in providing Secretary General Ban with this critical recommendation.”

While welcoming the recommendation to create an international investigative mechanism, TAPI urges the United States government to use its influence in the Security Council to implement the UN panel's recommendations.
