TAPI Welcomes Recommendations of the UN Panel of Experts on Sri Lanka

Published On Friday, April 15, 2011
The Tamil American Peace Initiative (TAPI) welcomes the recommendations laid out in the executive summary of the panel of experts report commissioned by United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

"I am extremely relieved to learn the report calls into question the integrity of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission, along with that of the Sri Lankan government,” said TAPI spokesman Dr. Karunyan Arulanantham. “Due to the government’s failure to act in earnest towards healing the deep wounds of its people, the only way for Sri Lanka to achieve meaningful, lasting reconciliation is through the establishment of an independent, international mechanism to oversee the accountability process. I am thankful to the panel of experts for seeing through the myriad of misinformation put forth by the Sri Lankan government and their diligence in providing Secretary General Ban with this critical recommendation.”

While welcoming the recommendation to create an international investigative mechanism, TAPI urges the United States government to use its influence in the Security Council to implement the UN panel's recommendations.
About TAPI
The Tamil American Peace Initiative was formed by a group of Tamil Americans to help bring lasting peace, justice, democracy, good governance and economic development to Sri Lanka; to focus attention on the destruction of Tamil communities and culture caused by almost three decades of war; and to demand an end to the continuing oppression of Tamils on the island.
